Twelfth Annual Arthur Lyons Film Festival
Coming May 10-13, 2012
Popular festival well-known for screening rare and rarely seen Film Noir classics;
All Access Passes go on sale April 1, 2012.
The Palm Springs Cultural Center announced today that the twelfth edition of the popular Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival will open on May 10th and continue through Sunday, May 13th, 2012. Founded in 2000 by Arthur Lyons and his wife, Barbara Lyons, the Palm Springs Film Noir Festival was renamed the Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival in 2008 after the untimely death of mystery author and Palm Springs community leader, Arthur Lyons.
Writer and film historian Alan K. Rode returns as the festival programmer and host for the fifth consecutive year. "I am thrilled to return to Palm Springs for the Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival," says Rode. "It is such a joy to continue Art's tradition of programming both renowned and rare films from the classic noir period along with special guest star appearances. There is simply no other festival in the world like this one."
Of note, the 2012 Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival will include a very rare screening of the 1955 film, HELL’S ISLAND. “This hard-to-find film, shot in Vistavision, has not been screened theatrically in decades, and is not available on DVD.” says Rode. “It’s a a fast-paced Technicolor thriller with overtones of THE MALTESE FALCON!” Another special treat for noir fans is the screening of a new 35mm print of THE GREAT GATSBY. Adapted from Fitzgerald’s novel and Owen Davis’ play, this post-war (1949) version of Gatsby, directed by Elliott Nugent, possesses a definitive noir texture after going through multiple screenplay iterations to obtain censorship approval.
"We have other classics and rarities on the program and we're in the process of finalizing some exciting guest star appearances," Rode continued. "The 2012 Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival will proudly uphold the dark cinematic tradition of classic film noir in the desert."
